“La Cage” is set in the exotic fantasy world of Saint Tropez and “La Cage aux Folles” the name of the night club renowned for spectacle. Within the night club and the adjoining living quarters of the proprietors Albin and Georges (played in London by George Hearn and Denis Quilley), two interweaving love stories with a difference take their course and a marriage of twenty years is almost ruined by a son’s thoughtlessness in being ashamed to introduce his parents to his fiancée’s parents. Love, suddenly put at risk, is strong enough to survive and the audience feels the entangled web of emotions which the characters are experiencing.
A uniquely toe-tapping singeable musical score has come from the pen of Jerry Herman, who gave us the unforgettable “Hello Dolly”, “Mame” and “Mack and Mabel”
